Frequently Asked
Questions
1
What is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a form of therapy that helps people heal from the emotional distress caused by disturbing life experiences. It's a structured, eight-phase approach designed to help you identify and process troubling memories, ultimately developing healthier responses and beliefs.
Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR doesn't require you to go into great detail about your traumatic events. Instead, it focuses on the emotions and body sensations that arise from these memories, facilitating a natural healing process

How does EMDR Therapy Work?
We begin by building a foundation of trust and safety, discussing your history, establishing goals, and learning techniques to manage stress and stay grounded during the sessions. Next, we identify specific memories causing you distress, pinpointing the negative beliefs and emotions tied to these memories. Through guided eye movements, taps, or sounds, we stimulate your brain in a way that helps reprocess traumatic memories. This reduces the vividness and emotional charge of these memories, allowing you to view them more neutrally.
3
Why choose EMDR?
EMDR therapy is designed to be a safe and supportive way to alleviate the effects of trauma and improve overall well-being. Backed by extensive research, it’s proven to be highly effective for many individuals dealing with trauma, anxiety, depression, and more. By tapping into your brain’s natural healing processes, EMDR helps you achieve lasting change and relief from emotional pain.
4
Do you offer other forms of therapy if I don't want to do EMDR?
Yes. I often integrate other therapeutic modalities to improve your treatment outcomes and support you in achieving your goals. We may pull skills from CBT (Cognitive-Behavioral) or DBT (Dialectical-Behavioral) and improve mindfulness practices. I am also trained in Solution Focused, Narrative, IFS (internal Family Systems), and trauma-focused therapy. If you have prior experience with a specific therapeutic modality, please inquire to discuss further.
5
How long will I be in therapy?
This varies person to person based on you personal experiences, symptoms, and how this impacts you in your life. Some people experience relief within a few sessions, while others may required months, a year, or longer.
6
How often should I come to therapy?
Therapy is most effective with consistency. I require that our sessions begin on a weekly basis as we understand how your brain and emotional wellbeing respond to therapy. As we continue to work together, and you begin to see improvements in your wellbeing, we can discuss bi-weekly sessions or monthly check-ins.
7
How long are therapy sessions?
Each therapy appointment can be expected to last 50-55 minutes. We can also discuss longer sessions for EMDR therapy as this can help you experience greater progress with the memory you are working on. EMDR therapy can be facilitated within the 50-55 minute session.
